The City of a Hundred Spires
Prague otherwise known as the ‘Golden City of a Hundred Spires’ is
a sophisticated city best known for its Gothic architecture. Its the capital city of Czech Republic, a country in Central Europe renowned for its baroque buildings, a medieval Astronomical clock and Gothic churches.
Landmarks that you need to visit whilst in the city include:
1. Old Town Square
This is a historic square located between Charles Bridge and Wenclesaus Square. It houses the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn as well as the Baroque St. Nicholas Church. There is also Prague Orloj; a medieval astronomical clock mounted on Old Town Hall that still functions since its installation in 1410. Christmas markets are held yearly attracting visitors from abroad and locals alike.
2. Charles Bridge
Its the most famous bridge that crosses the Vltava river and connects Prague castle with the Old Town. This bridge was built in 1357 and comprises of an alley with thirty bronze sculptures of patron saints. There are two bridge towers on either side; the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Lesser Town Bridge Tower.
3. Prague Castle
This castle complex located on Hradcany hill is comprised of palaces, churches, and courtyards. The castle was a seat of power for kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia. It houses the Bohemian Crown Jewels which are kept in a hidden room inside it. Prague palace is the official office as well as residence of the President of the Czech Republic.
There are other interesting places to visit in this lovely city. The Petrin Tower, inspired by the Eiffel Tower and situated on a hill offers an impeccable view of the city. New Town Prague comprised of attractions such as Charles Square, Wencenslaus Square, the National Museum and The Dancing House nicknamed 'the Ginger and Fred House' would be memorable to visit.
What is sure is that you won't run out of places to explore, be it taking a stroll along Vltava river or sitting down at the South Gardens. Enjoy a cup of coffee at the Louvre Café opened in 1902 whose most famous guest include Albert Einstein or visit the Žižkov Television Tower; considered as one of the ugliest buildings in the world.
If you're lucky enough to visit during the holiday season, indulge in mulled wine and Trdelník; a traditional pastry. Visiting the Lennon wall whose graffiti colored wall is sure to lift your spirits or go on a search of Prague's quirky statues then have a look later at the Prague Beer Museum.
Relaxing in a cafe is welcomed, sauntering in the Strahov library would appeal to book enthusiasts and in the evenings enjoy watching the sunset by the river side whose countless swans makes the experience even more appealing or wander through the Botanical garden and finally treat yourself to local delicacy while being entertained by the vibrant music scene.
